Funny and Terrible Campaign Song Videos

Despite the fact that we’re over a year away from the 2016 elections, things are already heating up. We’ve got former First Lady, former senator, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, current senator Bernie Sanders, and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley on the Democratic side, along with a few other hopeful, but unlikely candidates that will probably throw their hats in the ring later. And on the Republican side, we have… a clusterfuck that includes more than a dozen declared and likely-but-undeclared candidates, each one more terrifying than the last.

So, the time between now and November 2016 promises to be a time of nail-biting anguish and heated Facebook debates. However, there is at least one thing we can all agree on — there will plenty of funny and terrible YouTube videos to come out of the journey to the White House. To kick off the parade of the absurd, here are two campaign song videos that struck me as absurd and hilarious.

First up, here’s Stand With Hillary, which actually came out last year. It is quite possibly the most generic country song ever.

Then there’s this gem, brought to you by some supporters of Ted Cruz. It calls itself a rap song, and I won’t argue with it.

Given the assumed demographics of Clinton supporters and Cruz supporters, the genres alone struck me as bizarre. Hillary doesn’t strike me as much of a downhome country gal, and Ted Cruz is so far removed from the rap world that I think that “Cruz” might actually be the opposite for the word “rap”. But here we are. And both videos are terrible.

As a bonus, here is a terrible campaign song video from 2012, relevant because it supports Rick Santorum, who is again trying for the Republican nomination. This one’s not humorous for the genre — it’s pop-country-ish, which seems about right to me — but the singers do repeatedly attempt to rhyme “Reagan” (as in Ronald, patron saint of the Tea Party) and “again”. And it’s terrible.
