An Open Letter to Pro-Lifers in the Wake of YET ANOTHER Mass Shooting

Dear Pro-Lifers,

Congratulations! In the 42 years since Roe vs. Wade was decided, you have managed to push through at least 200 different restrictions on abortion. I’ll quickly hit some of the highlights, in case you’ve forgotten.

  • The Hyde Amendment — prohibits any federal funds from being used on abortions (no matter how many times you say it, no, the taxpayers are not paying Planned Parenthood to do abortions. It’s just not happening.)
  • Mandatory Waiting Periods
  • Parental Notification Laws
  • Unnecessary restrictions that have forced many clinics to close
  • And let’s not forget, you made up a procedure (so-called “partial-birth” abortion was never a medical term) and then banned it, making it significantly more difficult for women in need of a potentially life-saving termination in their third trimester to be treated.

And those are just some highlights.

What does that have to do with this latest mass shooting, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. As you can see, you’ve been remarkably successful in restricting abortions under the guise of concern for life. And mixed in among the latest details of the latest gruesome gun deaths, I see you leading the charge to defund Planned Parenthood (for reasons that I don’t quite understand, since you’re basically going to be defunding pap smears, birth control, STD testing, and the like — you’ve already defunded abortion.) So I want to ask you for a favor.

If you care — if you really, truly care — about the sanctity of life, do this. Back off Planned Parenthood for just a little while. We can have that fight later. Take your concern for life and your very successful political tactics, and aim them at the NRA. Aim them at gun lobbyists. Aim them at politicians who refuse to even DISCUSS sensible gun regulations. If what you really want is to preserve and protect human life, try — just for a little while! — using that influence to do for gun control what you’ve done for abortion restrictions.

It is October 2nd, 2015 as I write this. In this year alone, we’ve lost nearly 10,000 people to gun violence. Over 500 children under 12 have been killed or injured. Nearly 2000 children over 12 have been killed or injured. Just think — if you’d been lobbying for gun restrictions instead of abortion restrictions, you might have saved thousands of lives THIS YEAR ALONE, many of them belonging to the children that you claim to care so much about.

You know how to make noise, pro-lifers, and you know how to make changes. Changes that I desperately disagree with, changes that put the lives of women and the health of families in more danger than I think you realize — but nevertheless, you’ve been successful at it. If you really do care about human life, and not just about punishing women for having sex, take a break, just for a little while, and use your powerful voice and your pro-life message to help get some sensible gun laws passed.

Statistics show that women have abortions whether they’re legal or not. You can pass all the laws you want, and abortions will still happen. You’re not stopping them. But countries with sensible gun restrictions have fewer gun-related deaths than we do. Passing gun control laws will ACTUALLY SAVE LIVES, something that — for all your success at passing abortion restrictions — you’re not actually doing right now. Come on — put your ideology where your mouth is. Let’s really save some lives. For just a little while, let’s let “pro-life” mean “pro gun control.” Let’s save the lives of people who are actually already living.
